One of the signs of the end times is going to be an attack on Israel. This attack is described in Ezekiel chapters 38-39. Chapter 38 begins like this.
The word of the LORD came to me: “Son of man, set your face toward Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him and say, Thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I am against you, O Gog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal. And I will turn you about and put hooks into your jaws, and I will bring you out, and all your army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed in full armor, a great host, all of them with buckler and shield, wielding swords. Persia, Cush, and Put are with them, all of them with shield and helmet; Gomer and all his hordes; Beth-togarmah from the uttermost parts of the north with all his hordes many peoples are with you.
The first part of understanding this scripture is knowing the players, you’ll need a scorecard for this so here’s the scorecard.
The most obvious one is Persia, this would be Iran, up until 1935, Iran was known as Persia.
Gog is a title of the “chief prince” like king
Most of the rest of the names are descendants of Noah. By looking at where they settled we can determine the countries
Magog, and his descendants, Tubal and Meshech, settled north of the Caspian sea.
Meshech is also an ancient name for Moscow
The Tobol river and Tobolsk are in eastern Russia.
So Gog would be the King, or Czar of Russia.
Cush settled south of Egypt, in Sudan and Ethiopia Put settled in Libya.
Gomer settled around Germany and Austria and migrated throughout Europe, this could refer to Germany, or the European Union.
Bethtogarmah is the toughest, believed to be Armenia-Turkey area.
This is the likely coalition of countries that will attack Israel: Russia, Iran, Germany, Libya, Sudan, Ethiopia and Turkey. All have been enemies of the Jews in the past.
At a time when Israel feels secure, the bible says this is the coalition of countries that gathers to attack. When they are ready to attack, the bible says in verses 18-23
But on that day, the day that Gog shall come against the land of Israel, declares the Lord GOD, my wrath will be roused in my anger. For in my jealousy and in my blazing wrath I declare, On that day there shall be a great earthquake in the land of Israel. The fish of the sea and the birds of the heavens and the beasts of the field and all creeping things that creep on the ground, and all the people who are on the face of the earth, shall quake at my presence. And the mountains shall be thrown down, and the cliffs shall fall, and every wall shall tumble to the ground. I will summon a sword against Gog on all my mountains, declares the Lord GOD. Every man’s sword will be against his brother. With pestilence and bloodshed I will enter into judgment with him, and I will rain upon him and his hordes and the many peoples who are with him torrential rains and hailstones, fire and sulfur. So I will show my greatness and my holiness and make myself known in the eyes of many nations. Then they will know that I am the LORD.
And then in chapter 39:3-6
Then I will strike your bow from your left hand, and will make your arrows drop out of your right hand. You shall fall on the mountains of Israel, you and all your hordes and the peoples who are with you. I will give you to birds of prey of every sort and to the beasts of the field to be devoured. You shall fall in the open field, for I have spoken, declares the Lord GOD. I will send fire on Magog and on those who dwell securely in the coastlands, and they shall know that I am the LORD.
So once this coalition gathers against Israel and is ready to attack God is going to destroy them. First a great earthquake, then the armies panic and start fighting each other then, he will “rain upon him and his hordes and the many peoples who are with him torrential rains and hailstones, fire and sulfur. This is not only going to be directed at the armies but at the coalition countries themselves.
Some people say that the hailstones could represent missiles and the earthquake a nuclear explosion, but verse 23 says
So I will show my greatness and my holiness and make myself known in the eyes of many nations. Then they will know that I am the LORD.
This is going to happen exactly like the bible says, God is going to do this to get everyone’s attention and show how powerful He is.
Chapter 39:9-13 say that the carnage will be so great that it will take seven months to bury the dead. And that’s just the bodies that are found and not eaten by animals.
Why is God going to let this happen? It won’t be much later that God is going to send His judgments on the world and things will be much worse for those who don’t believe in Him. God is going to do this to show everyone that He is real. After this attack there will be no doubt that God is real, but people will still refuse to acknowledge Him. If you haven’t already accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and savior, I urge you not to wait and do it today.
